Quick & Easy Trompe l'Oeil: Decorative Painting on Walls, Furniture, Frames & More

This primer guides you through materials; preparing surfaces; mixing colors; and the laws of perspective from background to foreground—even an aerial view. “Supplies information on perspective, color, techniques, and architectonic and scenic methods.”—Booklist. “This is a great book for your painting library.”—Decorative Artist’s Workbook.

To truly fool the eye, trompe l'oeil painting must display convincing perspective, proper depth of field, and a credible play of light and shadow. Jocelyn Kerr Holding carefully explores these principles and many more, with detailed explanations of all the basic considerations behind the creation of a trompe l'oeil image and the various techniques available for achieving it, including perforating an existing drawing, painting freehand, projecting a photograph, and using photocopies in a decoupage manner. Despite the "quick and easy" promise of the book's title, however, many beginners will be intimidated by the process as presented here, since Holding offers no patterns (other than a small section of architectural motifs for photocopying) and presumes an existing comfort level with the handling of paint and perspective on the part of the reader to achieve, in her words, "a freehand reproduction of reality." But those seeking a decent primer on the art of trompe l'oeil will find much useful information here, along with some nicely rendered eye-fooling images of book- and object-filled shelves, landscape views, and animals. --Amy Handy

Minhazz at Sonabai's house

Minhazz at Sonabai's house

Sonabai was an amazing woman from rural Chhatisgarh -- Puhputra village. Isolated from others, she adapted traditional art forms to create decorative art truly unique in its three-dimensional expression. This is her home, where her art is her home.

Her work is currently on display at the Mingei International Museum. Here is the write up by Stephen Huyler who curated the exhibition: July 12, 2009 -February,2010: Mingei International Museum. In 2001, Dr. Huyler first traveled to the remote central Indian village of Puhputra in the state of Chhatisgarh to document the life of Sonabai Rajawar for a chapter in his book, Daughters of India. He was so impressed by Sonabai's home, her art and her life story, that Huyler resolved to collect the material for an exhibition and book solely about her. Decades ago, as a young bride with an infant son, Sonabai was forceably confined within the walls of her home by her considerably older husband. She was not allowed to see or talk to anyone else for fifteen years. During that time, with no previous training and in a style completely unprecedented in India, Sonabai began to sculpt her walls with colorful, whimsical, delightful art, populating her lonely home with her visions of the community she missed outside. Years later, she was discovered by the Indian art world and given the highest awards and recognition that an Indian artist can receive. Sonabai even traveled with her son to Mingei International in 1986 to display her creative techniques! Another Way of Seeing is the result of years of field research and photography by Dr. Huyler in Chhatisgarh. The exhibition, designed in collaboration with Duggal Visual Solutions in New York, will combine large, innovative photo-montages and projected films with fragile sculptures brought from Sonabai's village. After closing at the Mingei, it will be available to travel to other museums. Sonabai: Another Way of Seeing Stephen Huyler has also written a monograph on Sonabai, her art, the traditional art of her village, and the local artists she has inspired. This book is presently being laid out and designed, and will be published by Mapin Press and co-published by Mingei International, to be released in July, 2009.
